Three-Row SUVs Built for Treasure Valley Families

A third row changes what a vehicle can do. It's the difference between two trips to a Saturday tournament and one, between leaving a grandparent behind and bringing everyone to McCall.

At Driven, every third-row SUV in our used SUV inventory is all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Not most of them — all of them. We don't stock front-wheel-drive three-row crossovers, because a family hauler in Idaho needs to handle a February morning on Bogus Basin Road as confidently as it handles the school run down Fairview.

We serve families across Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Eagle, Kuna, Caldwell, and Garden City. Browse current three-row inventory, or contact us to schedule a test drive with the whole family along — we encourage it. Car seats and all.

Great experience. I was able to get a great deal on a newer Tahoe. It was a very simple and straight forward purchasing process. I’ve bought a handful of cars and it always took forever to get through financing. When I bought the Tahoe, I was in and out in an hour. That alone will have me return for my next vehicle purchase.

The Most Reliable Used Third-Row SUVs in Boise

Reliability is the first question most families ask, and it's the right one. A three-row SUV carries the people who matter most to you, usually with a lot of miles ahead of it. Here's what we tend to stock and why.

Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander is the most common three-row SUV on our lot, and that's deliberate. It has a long record of going well past 200,000 miles with routine maintenance, and it drives like a smaller vehicle than it is — easy to park in downtown Boise, easy to see out of.

Highlanders in the XLE and Limited trims typically add leather, navigation, rear-seat climate control, and heated seats. Limited Platinum models add captain's chairs in the second row and cooled front seats. Most Highlanders we carry are rated to tow around 5,000 pounds — enough for a small boat or a utility trailer. It's worth browsing our full Toyota selection as well, since Highlanders move quickly here.

Toyota Sequoia

If the Highlander is the family SUV, the Toyota Sequoia is the family truck. Built on Toyota's full-size truck platform, it seats seven or eight, tows substantially more, and has the interior room for adult passengers in the third row rather than just kids.

Newer Sequoias use Toyota's i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which pairs serious towing capability with better fuel economy than a V8 of the same size. If you tow a travel trailer to Redfish Lake or a boat up the Payette, this is the segment to look at.

Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer splits the difference on price and capability, and it's often the value pick in this segment. XLT trims cover the essentials well — three rows, four-wheel drive, backup camera, Bluetooth. ST models add a twin-turbo V6, captain's chairs, and a genuinely quick family vehicle.

The Explorer is a common sight on the I-84 corridor for a reason: it's comfortable at highway speed through the Nampa–Caldwell stretch, and the four-wheel-drive XLT handles a Boise Foothills gravel road without complaint. If your week is a West Ada school run and your weekend is a trailhead, this is the middle ground.

Luxury Three-Row SUVs

Three-row luxury depreciates hard, which works in your favor buying used. Depending on what's on the lot, that can mean a Volvo XC90, a Hyundai Palisade, an Audi Q7, a Land Rover LR4, or a Cadillac Escalade ESV — vehicles that cost far more new, now priced within reach of a mainstream SUV budget. A fair number reach us as trades from Eagle and the Boise Foothills, which is why the segment turns up here more often than you'd expect for a market this size.

Ask us about maintenance expectations before you buy one. We'd rather you know what an air suspension or a European V6 costs to service than find out later.

Seven Seats or Eight? What Treasure Valley Families Need

Seven-seat SUVs use captain's chairs in the second row — two separate seats with a gap between them. Eight-seat SUVs use a bench.

The bench wins on raw capacity. Captain's chairs win on almost everything else: kids can walk between them to reach the third row without anyone climbing out, car seats install without a middle-seat wrestling match, and the second row stops being a place where siblings touch each other.

This matters more here than in most markets. West Ada is the largest school district in Idaho, and carpool rotations in Meridian, Eagle, and Kuna routinely mean four kids plus your own. If you're the family that drives the carpool, count the seats you need on your worst week, not your average one.

Our rule of thumb: if you regularly carry eight people, get the bench. If you carry six or seven and value getting in and out easily, get the captain's chairs. Come sit in both — it takes five minutes and it usually settles the question.

Towing With a Third-Row SUV in the Treasure Valley

Most towing around here falls into a few predictable jobs: a boat to Lucky Peak or Lake Lowell, a camper up Highway 55 toward McCall, a utility trailer across town on Fairview, or a side-by-side into the Owyhees. A midsize three-row handles all but the heaviest of those.

Midsize three-rows like the Highlander and Explorer generally manage 5,000 to 5,600 pounds. Full-size options like the Sequoia, Escalade ESV, and LR4 climb well past 7,000 pounds, into travel-trailer and larger-boat territory. If you need more than any SUV offers, our used truck inventory is the next place to look.

Two things worth knowing: a factory tow package matters more than the headline rating, and passengers plus cargo count against your total capacity. If you plan to tow with seven people aboard, tell us — we'll make sure the vehicle you're looking at actually does what you need.

Used Third-Row SUVs Under $20,000 in Boise

A three-row SUV does not have to be a $40,000 purchase. Older Highlanders, Explorers, and luxury three-rows regularly land under $20,000 on our lot — often with leather, navigation, rear climate control, and a tow rating intact.

Higher-mileage examples of a reliable platform frequently make better sense than a low-mileage example of a fragile one. A 180,000-mile Highlander that's been maintained is a different proposition than a 90,000-mile SUV with a known transmission issue. We'll tell you which is which.

Every vehicle is priced to current Boise-area market data, and the price is the price whether you finance with us, use your own credit union, or pay cash — backed by our Best Price Guarantee.
