Idaho traction
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Idaho winters
Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive sends power to all four wheels all the time, using a balanced layout built around the low, flat boxer engine. For Idaho drivers, that means confident starts on snowy hills and gravel roads to trailheads.
- Standard on nearly every Subaru. The rear-drive BRZ is the exception, as is the front-drive 2026 Uncharted Premium among the EVs.
- Ground clearance. Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek ride higher than most cars, which helps in unplowed streets and on forest roads.
- X-MODE. Many recent models add X-MODE for slippery or steep terrain.
- Tires still matter. AWD helps you go, but good winter or all-weather tires help you stop and turn.

Model guide
Used Subaru models, gas to electric
Midsize wagon-crossover
Subaru Outback
Best for: Ski trips, dogs, bikes, and long highway drives.
Subaru’s best-known wagon, with 8.7 inches of ground clearance on recent generations. Turbo XT versions add power, Wilderness trims add off-road gear, and the 2026 redesign gave it a more SUV-like shape. Older “Legacy Outback” wagons are the same idea.
Compact SUV
Subaru Forester
Best for: Drivers who want tall-window visibility and easy cargo loading.
A boxy compact SUV known for outward visibility. A hybrid version arrived with the latest generation, and Wilderness trims add ground clearance and all-terrain tires.
Subcompact crossover
Subaru Crosstrek
Best for: Commuters who still head for trailheads on weekends.
Built on the Impreza, with extra ground clearance. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions have been offered in some years, and a Wilderness trim arrived for 2024.
Three-row SUV
Subaru Ascent
Best for: Families who need seven or eight seats and AWD.
The largest Subaru, with a turbocharged engine and three rows. Check the towing rating on the specific vehicle before pulling a trailer.
Compact car
Subaru Impreza
Best for: Budget-minded drivers who want AWD in a small car.
One of the few compact cars with standard AWD. It has come as a sedan and hatchback, and recent models are hatchback-only.
Midsize sedan
Subaru Legacy
Best for: Commuters who want a roomy AWD sedan.
A midsize sedan with standard AWD. Subaru ended Legacy production after the 2025 model year, so used examples are the way to get one.
Performance sedan
Subaru WRX
Best for: Enthusiasts who want a fast, practical AWD car.
A turbocharged, AWD sport sedan, with a manual transmission available. Many are driven hard or modified, so an independent inspection matters.
Sports coupe
Subaru BRZ
Best for: Drivers who want a light, fun summer car.
A rear-wheel-drive coupe developed with Toyota. It’s the one gas Subaru without AWD, so plan on winter tires.
Electric SUV
Subaru Solterra
Best for: EV shoppers who want AWD and Subaru practicality.
Subaru’s first EV, sold since the 2023 model year and refreshed for 2026. It’s the Subaru EV you’re most likely to find used.
Electric compact crossover
Subaru Uncharted
Best for: Commuters who want long range in a smaller EV.
New for 2026, with more than 300 miles of manufacturer-estimated range on the front-drive Premium and dual-motor AWD on Sport and GT.
Electric wagon-style SUV
Subaru Trailseeker
Best for: Outback fans ready to go electric.
New for 2026, with standard AWD, 375 horsepower, and towing capability.
Before you buy
What to check on a used Subaru, by era
| Era | Known issue or program | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Late 1990s–2011 with the 2.5L EJ engine (non-turbo) | Widely reported head gasket seepage; timing belt engines | Look for coolant or oil seepage where the heads meet the block, and ask whether the head gaskets and timing belt have been replaced. |
| 2010–2015 models with a CVT | Subaru extended CVT coverage to 10 years/100,000 miles from the original warranty start date on listed models | That coverage window has largely closed on these years. Ask for CVT fluid service records, and on the test drive watch for shudder, whine, or hesitation. |
| 2011–2015 models with early FB engines | Oil consumption settlement on certain Forester, Impreza, Crosstrek, Legacy, and Outback models | Check the oil level and condition and ask about oil consumption repairs. FB engines use a timing chain, not a belt. |
| Turbo models (WRX, XT, Ascent) | Hard use and aftermarket modifications | Ask about tunes and modified parts, and check the service history. A pre-purchase inspection matters most here. |
| 2023 and newer EVs (Solterra, Uncharted, Trailseeker) | Charging port, adapters, and battery condition | Confirm which charging port the vehicle has and which adapters come with it, and compare the range at full charge with the original estimate. |
Subaru factory coverage: 3 years/36,000 miles basic and 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain, whichever comes first, counted from the original delivery date. It applies to every owner during the warranty period (Subaru Warranty & Maintenance Booklet).

Used Subaru FAQ
Do all used Subarus have all-wheel drive?
Almost all. Every gas and hybrid Subaru except the rear-wheel-drive BRZ comes with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. On the EV side, most models are AWD, but the 2026 Uncharted Premium is front-wheel drive.
Do I need to tell Subaru when I buy a used Subaru?
It’s a good idea. Subaru’s warranties stay with the vehicle for every owner during the coverage period, and Subaru asks new owners to update ownership records so they get recall notices and warranty information.
Which older Subarus are known for head gasket problems?
Head gasket seepage is widely reported on Subarus with the non-turbo 2.5-liter EJ engine, roughly from the late 1990s through 2011. Ask for repair records and have a mechanic check for coolant or oil seepage.
Was the CVT warranty extended on older Subarus?
Yes. Subaru extended CVT coverage to 10 years or 100,000 miles from the original warranty start date on listed 2010–2015 Outback, Legacy, Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, and 2015 WRX models. Most of these vehicles are now past that window, so service records matter.
Which Subarus were part of the oil consumption settlement?
The 2016 settlement covered certain FB-engine models, including 2011–2014 Forester, 2012–2013 Impreza, and 2013 Crosstrek, Legacy, and Outback with automatic or CVT transmissions, plus some manual-transmission models through 2015. The claim deadlines have passed, so check oil consumption history.
Should I buy a used Outback, Forester, or Crosstrek?
The Outback is the longest, with a wagon-style cargo area for long trips. The Forester has an upright, boxy cabin with big windows, and the Crosstrek is the smallest and easiest to park. All three have AWD and generous ground clearance.
Which Subaru EV should I look for used?
The Solterra, sold since 2023, is the Subaru EV you’re most likely to find used. The Uncharted and Trailseeker are new for 2026. Our Used EV Buying Checklist covers what to check on any used EV.
Is a used WRX a good choice for Boise?
It can be. AWD and a turbo engine make it a capable year-round car, but many WRXs are modified or driven hard. Ask about modifications, check the clutch and service records, and get an independent inspection.
