Towing and hauling
How to read a used Ram’s payload and towing ratings
Idaho trucks pull boats to the reservoirs, campers into the mountains, and horse and hay trailers year-round. Before you hitch up, find the numbers for the exact truck, not the brochure maximum.
Driver’s door jamb
Tire and loading label
Shows the most weight in passengers and cargo this truck can carry. That figure is its payload, and trailer tongue weight counts against it.
Driver’s door or door pillar
Certification label
Lists the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and front and rear axle ratings (GAWR). The loaded truck shouldn’t exceed any of them.
Owner’s manual and Ram’s guide
Towing rating
Usually not on a door label. Match the engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, and 2WD or 4WD to Ram’s towing guide for that model year.
Go by the smallest rating in the chain. The truck’s rating, the hitch receiver, the ball mount, and the trailer all have limits, and the weakest link sets your limit.

Model guide
Ram trucks and vans, explained
Full-size half-ton pickup
Ram 1500
Made for: Daily driving, boat trailers, and family road trips.
The current generation arrived for 2019, with a mild-hybrid eTorque system on many trims. For 2025 Ram switched to the Hurricane inline-six, and for 2026 it brought back the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 as an option.
Previous-generation half-ton
Ram 1500 Classic
Made for: Buyers who want a simpler, lower-priced Ram.
The older-design 1500, sold alongside the newer truck after 2019. Ram ended Classic production in 2024.
Half-ton with a 3.0L V6 diesel
Ram 1500 EcoDiesel
Made for: Long highway miles with a light trailer.
A diesel half-ton offered in both the earlier and current generations. 2014–2016 trucks are covered by the federal emissions settlement, so ask whether the free software update was done.
High-performance off-road pickups
Ram 1500 TRX and RHO
Made for: Desert and high-speed dirt-road driving.
The first TRX ran from 2021 to 2024 with a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8. The RHO followed for 2025 with a high-output Hurricane six. Ram says a new TRX arrives in the second half of 2026 as a 2027 model.
Three-quarter-ton pickup
Ram 2500 Heavy Duty
Made for: Fifth-wheel campers, horse trailers, and hay hauling.
Offered with gas V-8s or the Cummins turbo diesel. Some trucks have rear air suspension, and the Power Wagon is the off-road version.
One-ton pickup
Ram 3500 Heavy Duty
Made for: The heaviest trailers, including dually configurations.
The highest-capacity Ram pickup, available with single or dual rear wheels. Ratings vary widely by engine, axle ratio, and configuration, so check the specific truck.
Turbo-diesel engine option
Cummins diesel (2500/3500)
Made for: Frequent heavy towing over mountain passes.
The Cummins 6.7-liter turbo diesel is the diesel choice on Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. Recent ones use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and a diesel particulate filter, so emissions-system service records matter.
Full-size cargo van
Ram ProMaster
Made for: Contractors, delivery work, and van camping.
A front-wheel-drive cargo and passenger van with a low load floor and several roof heights. The smaller ProMaster City was also sold for several years.
Electric cargo van
Ram ProMaster EV
Made for: Local routes where a van returns to base each night.
Ram’s all-electric cargo van, on sale for 2026 with an 8-year/100,000-mile e-powertrain and battery limited warranty, according to Ram.
Range-extended electric pickup
Ram 1500 REV
Made for: Shoppers watching for an electrified Ram.
A battery-powered truck with a gas V6 generator that recharges the battery. It was formerly called Ramcharger, after Ram dropped its fully electric 1500 plan. Ram has said it’s planned for a 2027 arrival, so none are on the used market yet.
Older midsize pickup
Dodge Dakota
Made for: A smaller, budget truck.
A Dodge-badged midsize pickup that ended production in 2011. Stellantis has previewed a new Ram Dakota for dealers, with a launch expected around 2028.
Before you buy
What to check on a used Ram
Diesel emissions parts
On a Cummins or EcoDiesel truck, ask for DEF and diesel particulate filter service history, and look for emissions warning lights. Ask whether any emissions equipment was removed or reprogrammed. Tampering can cause registration and repair problems.
DEF level and quality
Check the DEF gauge and make sure the fluid looks clear. When DEF runs low, the truck warns the driver, and running out can limit engine power or speed until it’s refilled.
Air suspension
On trucks with air suspension, cycle through the ride-height settings, listen for the compressor, and see whether one corner sits lower after the truck has been parked.
Tow package wear
Look at the hitch receiver, the trailer wiring plug, the brake controller, and the bed for gooseneck or fifth-wheel mounting holes. Heavy towing wears transmissions, brakes, and cooling systems, so ask what the truck has pulled.
Signs of hard work
Check the bed, the frame, and the underbody for damage, and ask for fluid change records on the transmission and axles.
EcoDiesel emissions update
For a 2014–2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, ask whether the free settlement software update was done. A completed update came with an extended emissions warranty.
Open recalls
Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask for records of completed recall repairs.
CARFAX and your own mechanic
Read the free CARFAX report, then have a diesel or truck shop look the Ram over before you sign.
Ram’s 2025 Heavy Duty warranty booklet lists 3 years/36,000 miles basic coverage, 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain on gas engines, and 5 years/100,000 miles on the Cummins diesel engine. Coverage is counted from the original warranty start date, so many used trucks are past it (2025 Ram Heavy Duty warranty booklet).

Used Ram FAQ
Why are some older Ram trucks listed as Dodge?
Ram pickups were sold under the Dodge name until Ram became its own brand around 2010. Older trucks may appear as Dodge Ram on titles and history reports, while newer ones are simply Ram. It’s the same truck line.
How do I find the payload of a used Ram?
Open the driver’s door and find the tire and loading information label. It lists the most weight in passengers and cargo that specific truck can carry. A nearby certification label lists the gross vehicle weight rating and axle ratings.
Where do I find a used Ram’s towing capacity?
Towing ratings usually aren’t on the door label. They depend on the engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, and drivetrain, so match those details to Ram’s towing guide for that model year. Then check the hitch’s rating and stay under whichever is smaller.
Do Cummins diesel Rams need DEF?
Recent Cummins-powered Ram Heavy Duty trucks use diesel exhaust fluid to reduce emissions, and so does the 1500 EcoDiesel. DEF is sold at most fuel stations and parts stores, and it goes in its own tank, never the fuel tank.
Does a used Cummins Ram still have engine warranty?
Maybe. Ram’s 2025 Heavy Duty warranty booklet lists a Cummins Diesel Engine Limited Warranty of 5 years or 100,000 miles, counted from the original warranty start date. Many used trucks will be past that, so check the in-service date and mileage.
Which Ram 1500 EcoDiesel trucks were in the emissions settlement?
The settlement covered 2014–2016 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee models with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel. The fix is a free software update, and updated vehicles get an extended emissions warranty.
Is the Ram 1500 REV electric truck on sale?
Not yet. The 1500 REV, formerly called Ramcharger, is a range-extended electric pickup that uses a gas generator to recharge its battery. Ram has said it plans a 2027 arrival. The ProMaster EV van is the electric Ram on sale now.
What’s the difference between a Ram 1500 and a 1500 Classic?
The 1500 Classic is the previous-generation design that Ram kept in production as a lower-priced option after the newer 1500 arrived for 2019. Production ended in 2024. The newer truck has an updated interior and suspension.
