Warranty for used buyers

What Kia’s warranty covers when you buy used

Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile headline warranty is for the first owner. Here’s what carries over to you, all measured from the vehicle’s original date of first service.

From Kia’s warranty page and Kia’s Warranty and Consumer Information Manual. Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, sold only by Kia dealers, keep 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage (Kia CPO benefits).

Theft-prone model years

Kia’s turn-key theft issue and the free software upgrade

Certain 2011–2022 Kias with a traditional key and no engine immobilizer became theft targets after methods spread on social media. Kia’s free software upgrade keeps a locked vehicle from starting without the key, and dealers add a window decal when it’s done.

Eligible for the software upgrade

  • Forte 2014–2021
  • K5 2021–2022
  • Optima 2011–2020
  • Rio 2012–2021
  • Sedona 2011–2021
  • Seltos 2021–2022
  • Sorento 2011–2022
  • Soul 2020–2022
  • Sportage 2011–2022

Not eligible for the upgrade

  • Forte 2011–2015
  • Rio 2011–2021
  • Soul 2011–2021
  • Sportage 2011–2014
  • Sedona 2014

Owners of these got anti-theft reimbursement options instead.

Ranges overlap because eligibility depends on the exact vehicle. Push-button-start Kias aren’t affected. For a turn-key Kia, check the VIN on the Kia theft settlement site.

Before you buy

What to check on a used Kia

  1. Warranty start date

Find the vehicle’s original in-service date and mileage. Coverage is measured from that date, not the day you buy it.

  2. Theft software upgrade

On a turn-key Kia from 2011 to 2022, look for Kia’s anti-theft window decal and check the VIN on the settlement site. Push-button-start Kias aren’t part of the program.

  3. Engine settlement coverage

Certain 2011–2019 Optima, 2012–2019 Sorento, and 2011–2019 Sportage models with 2.0L or 2.4L GDI engines qualify for Kia’s lifetime short-block coverage once the knock sensor software update is done. Ask for oil change records too.

  4. EV6 ICCU recall

Kia recalled 2022–2024 EV6 models because the charging control unit can fail and stop charging the 12-volt battery. Confirm the recall work on the VIN before you buy.

  5. EV battery and charging

Compare the range at full charge with Kia’s original estimate, test both Level 2 and DC fast charging if you can, and confirm which charging port and adapters come with the car.

  6. Open recalls on any Kia

Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask for records of completed recall work.

  7. CARFAX and an outside inspection

Read the free CARFAX report, then take the Kia to an independent mechanic you trust. For an EV, a shop with EV experience can check battery health.

Used Kia FAQ

Does Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile warranty transfer to a used Kia?

Not the powertrain part. Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage is for the original owner and buyers of Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. Later owners get 5 years/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage, and whatever remains of the 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty transfers.

Does the EV battery warranty transfer on a used Kia EV6 or EV9?

Yes. Kia’s warranty manual says every warranty except the original-owner powertrain coverage transfers to later owners. That includes the EV System Warranty on the motor and high-voltage battery, for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service.

Which Kias got the anti-theft software update?

Certain 2011–2022 Kias with a turn-key ignition and no engine immobilizer, including models of Forte, K5, Optima, Rio, Sedona, Seltos, Sorento, Soul, and Sportage. Eligibility varies by model year, so check the VIN on the Kia theft settlement site.

How can I tell if a used Kia is theft-prone?

Kias with push-button start aren’t part of the program. On a turn-key model from 2011 to 2022, look for Kia’s anti-theft window decal, which dealers apply after the upgrade, and confirm by VIN.

Is a used Kia Sportage with a GDI engine covered by the engine settlement?

It can be. Kia offers limited lifetime short-block coverage, for original and later owners, on 2011–2019 Sportage models with a 2.0L or 2.4L GDI engine once the free knock sensor software update is done. Keep oil change records, because neglect isn’t covered.

What should I ask about a used Kia EV6 before buying?

Ask whether recall 24V-867 for the ICCU was completed on 2022–2024 models. Also ask for the battery’s range at full charge, and which charging port and adapters the car has.

Can I get Kia Certified Pre-Owned coverage from Driven?

No. Kia’s CPO program, which restores the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage, is only offered through Kia dealers. Driven is independent, so we offer a free CARFAX report, an open door for outside inspections, and $0 dealer fees instead.

Is the Kia Soul still made?

No. Kia ended the Soul after the 2025 model year. Used Souls are still easy to find and service, and 2020–2022 turn-key Souls are eligible for the theft software upgrade.
