IONIQ EVs

IONIQ charging: 800 volts and the NACS port

Why 800 volts helps

The IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and IONIQ 9 sit on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, which runs at 800 volts. Hyundai quotes its quickest 10–80% charging times on 350-kW, 800-volt DC chargers.

Which plug does it have?

Hyundai moved to built-in NACS (Tesla-style) ports starting with the 2025 IONIQ 5 and the 2026 IONIQ 9. Older IONIQ and Kona Electric models have a CCS port and need an adapter for Superchargers. See Hyundai’s charging page.

From Hyundai’s charging page and Hyundai’s NACS adapter announcements. Confirm the port on the specific vehicle.

Powertrain choices

Gas, hybrid, plug-in, or electric?

Hyundai sells most of its SUVs in more than one powertrain. Pick based on where you charge and how you drive, not the badge. Cold Treasure Valley mornings cut electric range on EVs and plug-ins.

  • Gas

Pick it for: Mostly highway miles, towing, or a smaller upfront cost.

Santa Fe, Palisade, Tucson, Elantra, Sonata, Venue, Santa Cruz

  • Hybrid

Pick it for: Lots of stop-and-go city driving with no charging at home.

Tucson Hybrid, Santa Fe Hybrid, Elantra Hybrid, Sonata Hybrid, and the 2026 Palisade Hybrid

  • Plug-in hybrid

Pick it for: Short daily trips on electric power with a gas engine for road trips, and a place to plug in.

Tucson Plug-in Hybrid and Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid

  • Electric

Pick it for: Home charging and a commute well inside the range, even on cold mornings.

Hyundai engine settlements and anti-theft programs

Several Hyundai programs follow the vehicle, not the owner, so a used buyer can still benefit. Each applies to certain vehicles only, so confirm by VIN.

From the settlement sites, Hyundai’s service bulletins posted by NHTSA, and Hyundai’s anti-theft site. Push-button-start Hyundais aren’t part of the theft programs.

Questions to ask about a used Hyundai

Recall details from NHTSA. Look up any VIN with NHTSA’s recall tool.
AskWhy it matters
Is the ICCU recall finished? On 2022–2024 IONIQ 5 and certain 2023–2025 IONIQ 6 models, recall 24V-868 covers the charging control unit, which can stop charging the 12-volt battery and cut drive power.
Has the IONIQ 5 battery been replaced?Recall 26V-432 covers certain 2023–2024 IONIQ 5 models whose high-voltage cells may cause a fire. Until it’s repaired, Hyundai advises parking outside and charging to no more than 80%. The fix is a new battery assembly.
Does the Santa Fe have a factory tow hitch harness?Recall 23V-181 covers certain 2019–2023 Santa Fe models, including hybrids and plug-ins, plus the Santa Cruz, with a Hyundai-installed hitch harness that can short out.
Which engine and programs apply?Match the model year and engine to the settlement and anti-theft table above, then confirm by VIN.
How much range is left?On an EV or plug-in, compare the range at full charge with the original estimate, and expect less in an Idaho winter.
What does the CARFAX show?Every Driven vehicle comes with a free CARFAX report. Use it, then have your own mechanic inspect the vehicle.

What sets Driven apart for Hyundai buyers

Used Hyundai FAQ

I’m buying a used Hyundai. What’s left of the factory warranty?

As a later owner, you get whatever remains of the 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and powertrain parts are covered under it. The 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty stays with the original owner, though Hyundai lets it continue if the vehicle passes to the owner’s spouse.

Is the Hyundai hybrid or EV battery warranty good for second owners?

Yes. Hyundai lists 10 years/100,000 miles of coverage on the hybrid or electric battery and key hybrid system parts for both original and subsequent owners, and says the battery won’t degrade below 70% of original capacity during that period.

Is there a recall on the IONIQ 5 battery?

Yes. Recall 26V-432 covers certain 2023–2024 IONIQ 5 models. Dealers replace the high-voltage battery assembly free of charge, and until then Hyundai advises parking outside and charging to 80% at most. Check any VIN on NHTSA’s site.

Can a 2024 IONIQ 5 charge at a Tesla Supercharger?

Yes, with a NACS adapter. The 2022–2024 IONIQ 5 has a CCS port, and Hyundai offered free adapters to owners who bought by January 31, 2025. The 2025 and newer IONIQ 5 has a built-in NACS port.

Why does 800-volt charging matter on a used IONIQ?

The IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and IONIQ 9 use Hyundai’s 800-volt E-GMP platform, so they can take advantage of the fastest 350-kW DC chargers. The Kona Electric uses a 400-volt system, which charges more slowly on those stations.

What is the Hyundai E2 engine settlement?

It’s a class settlement covering certain Sonata Hybrid, Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, and Veloster models with specific engines. It extends coverage for connecting rod bearing failure to 15 years/150,000 miles from original retail delivery, for original and later owners.

Which used Hyundais need the anti-theft software?

Certain 2011–2022 Hyundais that start with a turned key and lack an engine immobilizer. Some older models can’t take the software and were offered an ignition cylinder protector or a steering wheel lock as the alternative. Check a VIN on Hyundai’s anti-theft site.

Should I buy a used Tucson Hybrid or Tucson Plug-in Hybrid?

The hybrid charges itself and suits drivers without a home outlet. The plug-in adds a larger battery for short trips on electric power, so it makes the most sense if you can charge every night.
